Some Wrecker headcanons for Wrecker Wednesday
Tumblr media
Look, I know I talk about food a lot, but it's my true love, so I'm not sorry, and I'll probably definitely do it again.
Because this man can cook. He never really even considered cooking before the Batch got to Pabu, but after trying Shep's sushi, Wrecker and Omega begged Shep and Lyana to teach them how to make it. That was how it started.
And because Wrecker is intensely competitive and loves a challenge, he pushed himself to make the most perfect kriffin' sushi on the island. The most precise knife work for his sashimi, the most uniform nigiri, and when he perfected maki on the first day, he demanded a real challenge and immediately graduated to uramaki.
The Marauder was sticky for three days afterward.
After that, he wanted to learn it all. Every time he went to a new food cart on Pabu, he'd watch the vendor's techniques and try to replicate them exactly when he was practicing on his own. He scoured the holonet for new recipes and tutorials. He started testing new flavor combinations (some of them were so bad even Batcher wouldn't eat them, but mostly they were good to great), and combining different techniques, and experimenting with new ingredients that the Batch encountered on their travels. Sometimes it was a huge success, and sometimes it was a spectacular failure, but either way, he learned something new every single time.
Over time, he realized that the type of cooking he enjoyed most was the fiddly, delicate, precise work; he was good at it from all those years working with sensitive explosives, and he liked to keep his skills sharp. But what he loved most was when his family all sat down to eat a meal he'd painstakingly cooked for them, balancing Omega's endlessly curious palate with Hunter's sensitivity to overwhelming flavors and Crosshair's love of spicy and acidic food. When he found the perfect dish to satisfy all three? Well, that was a good day.

Megumi is not good at cooking. Not the way that Tsumiki is. He remembers how she used to stretch their meager meals. To this day, he cannot perfectly recreate the warm kakitamajiru she'd made, powdered ginger, thin sliced scallion, white pepper. But she always could. She tells him there's no secret ingredient, but there has to be, if only that it's his sister's hands which made it.
That is not to say he cannot cook. He's good at following recipes. Gojo's more than once ruffled his hair in the morning, thanking him for the leftovers in the fridge (and despite his denial Gojo-san is picky). But it's never the same.
At first, you'd thought it was some weird, chauvinistic holdover and had been fully prepared to absolutely tear into Gojo about it. Megumi's a bit embarrassed about that (one of the few almost-fights he'd witnessed between the two of you), but he exhales softly as you wrap an arm around his shoulders, patting his hair as he leans against you in the kitchen.
You now think that it's funny, but it's also cute because when Megumi really wants to eat something that tastes better than mine, he'll do literally everything up to and including prep, and also dishes after.
He's young with time to learn, but it's considerate while also being sad. You do appreciate it, but before you all moved to campus, Megumi kept his own room tidy, made plenty of his own meals, avoided asking to do any kind of extracurricular which could cost you and Gojo either time or money. It was difficult to teach him to be a child and you'd never quite managed it with either Megumi or Tsumiki - both of them resistant to being taken care of, both of them too early acquainted with the reality that some people read care and saw burden.
Megumi leans against your shoulder as you stroke his hair, fluffy soft, a smile on your lips as you wait for a couple tomatoes to blanch.
You don't tell him he didn't have. You grin, remembering the adorable little growl he'd made last time. It's good to see him being a bit of a brat, comfortable with it.
"Thanks," you say instead, and he leans heavier for a second before standing straight, freeing your arm to dish out the tomatoes into a bowl. He even takes them to the sink, peeling the loosened skin, the mealy inner portion getting under his nails.
You are so grateful that Megumi has already sliced up the onions and put them in water just how you like them.
You're slicing the tomatoes into wedges, Megumi standing back at your shoulder like him watching you do this for the seventh time will finally give him the answer, when you start talking.
"You know, my mom used to make this for me. They've got a garden." Lots of people in the countryside have gardens. "And we got tons of tomatoes every year. And it doesn't matter how many times I make it. I think hers will always be better."
Megumi looks from your hands to your face and then slowly back again as you scrape the cut half up onto the flat of the knife and into a bowl and then start on a new one.
"She says the same thing about her parents' food," you smile. "Her dad's gyoza. She's very sure that filling is better than anything she ever made for us growing up."
The look on your face is so soft it makes Megumi's face warm and something comfortable-uncomfortable wanted-unwanted twist in his stomach.
You nudge him. "Save about a few slices for the salad?"
He nods and gets you another bowl to set the sliced tomato aside.
You set about putting together the rest of the meal while he trails behind. Blanching thinly sliced beef, pointing out what needed to be mixed for a gingery vinaigrette, stir frying tomatoes, eggs, onions, chicken, lotus roots, napa, noodles...
He mumbles an apology when his stomach growls as he's setting out two places. It's an awful lot of food for a night when Gojo-san isn't coming around, maybe he just had big eyes when he was pulling everything out.
You just laugh. "It's almost done. You can start, don't wait."
But he does, carrying plates from the counter to the table for you and giving you such a puppyish stare when you don't sit down fast enough it makes you abandon wiping down a spot of flour to pull off your apron an sit across from him.
"itadakimasu," he murmurs, politely pressing his palms together as you do the same.
He closes his eyes a little longer than necessary to savor.
"Yours still tastes better."
If you could reach him, you're pretty sure you'd be happily making his hair even more of a mess than it already is right now. There's a secret, complicated look on your face, although he's sure it's mostly happy. And in the end you just say,
"Thanks, Megumi."
"Mm," he replies, holding out his bowl as you offer him another spoonful of noodles.

What I would feed HL characters and why
Because cooking food is the best love language
Tumblr media
Sebastian Sallow - Beef bourguignon (French beef stew) with scalloped potatoes
(because that boy probably eats like a hobbit and I’m all for it.) (And an Onion soup for starters and a warm caramel apple pie with vanilla ice for dessert. He’s my favourite he gets the full course.)
Ominis Gaunt - Fraisier (French strawberry cake)
(because don’t tell me that boy doesn’t love sweets and especially fancy desserts. He’d try to hide his love for cute desserts tho.)
Garreth Weasley - Fancy Grilled cheese with cheddar and onion jam
(he is the kind of guy to always enthusiastically compliment the food but never remember what it was. Just that it was good.)
Leander Prewett - Bento cake with words of affirmation
(because he needs some reassurance. Like « you’re doing great », or « good boy » to fit in the small space ?)
Amit Thakkar - Dakgalbi (Spicy stir-fried chicken)
(I’m sure that poor boy suffers from being forced to eat British food everyday but I don’t want to insult his palate with my poor knowledge of Indian cooking. So Korean spicy chicken it will be, I bet he’d be eager to discover a new cuisine.)
Poppy Sweetings - Onion tart and a muffin
(all vegan because that girl would be vegan, and she needs food easy to eat while out while she cares for beasts.)
Natsai Onai - Cinnamon rolls with a hot chocolate topped with whipped cream
(because I’m sure her mother doesn’t let her eat too much sugar but she loves it.)
Imelda Reyes - Cacio e Pepe pasta
(because she needs her carbs as a quidditch player and she must like simple things. And she’d tell me I did it wrong, like Italians when you cook Italian food. Same attitude.)
Anne Sallow - Juk (Korean rice porridge) and brownies
(rice porridges in many Asian cultures are popular when sick, to give strength. And a yummy comforting dessert for that strong girl.)

Steve's asking what Billy would like to eat for dinner. Again.
"Whatever." Billy waits for Steve to make a choice.
It's the truth. Billy will eat whatever. It's not like he's got a choice what's being cooked at home. Before Susan he had to make dinner most of the time. So dinner had consisted of whatever he found in the freezer or whatever he was able to put on a sandwich.
He never expected that Steve likes to cook. For Billy. He offered twice now.
Billy doesn't care. Food is nourishment and that's it.
"I could cook you whatever you want to eat."
Steve gives him an encouraging smile. It's a weird smile. Like Billy is missing something obvious. Something that Steve worries about, but doesn't want to say out loud.
"Thanks," Billy says, because he is an ass, but he can behave himself sometimes.
It's still wrong. Steve purses his lip, then he sighs. "I just want to make something nice for you."
"Your ass is already nice enough." Billy licks his lips, trying to ignore his trembling hands because somewhere in the back of his mind there is a memory. A bitter one. A sweet one.
Steve scrunches his nose. "But you'll starve eventually. So what's your favorite dish?"
Billy actually has to think about that one. He can't remember if he ever talked about that. He likes pizza and burgers. And tacos but he's pretty sure they suck here in Indiana.
But...
"My mom used to make..." he stops. Has a knot in his throat. Can't bring himself to say it. Has to think of her, whistling in the kitchen. Getting a little stool and letting him help. Has to think of the broken plate and the door closing. Has to think of his dad forgetting about dinner. Has to think about hungry nights.
Steve's hand is on his, squeezing it a little.
"Spaghetti with meatballs." It hurts to say it. It's so fucking stupid.
"Do you want to eat that again?" Steve's voice is careful and soft, his tone wrapping Billy in a blanket.
He nods, not able to find the right words to put this wanting into words. A yes isn't strong enough.
Steve buys groceries. Listens to Billy trying to remember what herbs she put in there. He gets it a bit wrong.
It's different. It's the best meal Billy has eaten in years. A little salty, because of his tears.
But it tastes like home, made by Steve. Food is home. Maybe food means love, too.

I made shrimp in black bean sauce!!! 😋 the pungent, deep flavor of the fermented bean paste makes this dish phenomenal. The umami is undeniably present. The fresh vegetables give it a crisp sweetness that pairs perfectly with the black bean sauce. I fried the shrimp after coating them in corn starch so they were light and crispy. The combination was delightful 😊. I served it on a bed of rice to balance the depth of flavor in the sauce. It was delicious 😋 😍 I've never made this before, but it was easy to do. Everyone should cook their own food because it gives you a very joyful satisfaction and great food. When I make my own food, I can control the amount of salt and ingredients to make it just the way I want it to be. This time, I added more onions, carrots and green peas to the dish because that's how I like it. I use recipes as guidelines, but I always add my own style and flavors to everything that I cook. In this way, I make the dish my own, and in my opinion, it tastes much better. It saves sooooooo much money, too. It's a great experience. This dish was better than the food that I get in Chinese restaurants, and it was a quarter of the price. In the words of Julia Child, bon Appétit! Food is love, and I love to cook. Make enough to share the love ❤️ 😍 😋😋😊

Is 5 inches in length too small?
Tumblr media
Well...it is if I wanted a 6 inch. But, I'm definitely going to eat it and enjoy it anyway, especially if it has jalapeños ☺️😇☺️ I'm hungry!

Made Alfredo then accidentally took a picture that reminds me of Alfredo. This Alfredo was made with shrimp and chicken thigh with the skin on. Shrimp was cooked first until bright pink, then set aside. The chicken was sprinkled with salt, pepper, and a light coating of flour. Then sauteed in a pan with about 2 tbsp of avocado oil. Once fully cooked, the meat was cut off the bone and set aside. Next the spinach was sauteed with 5 cloves of garlic. After about a minute, heavy cream was added. Once that was hot I added mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Once it was mixed in I added pasta and a tad bit more salt to taste. It turned out amazing and my family was very happy.
Don't know why I wrote it this way. But I hope your day is full of magic
